Provincial Army
The Provincial Army consists of two main parts. The professional
regiments of the Regular Provincial Army can be added to armies for campaigns by
order of the Provincial Overseer or the Emperor. The part-time soldiers of the
Provincial Militia are usually only called up for defence of their own
provinces. However the ruler of each province can order the militia of their own province
to fight in external wars but is then responsible for their pay. Provincial Army
officers are trained at the Provincial School of Battle in Mirin's Cross. This
provides the officer corps with an understanding of Lunar tactics and military
doctrine. Since 1611 the Provincial Overseer has frequently levied a War Tax on
the provinces instead of demanding military service on the Southern Front. This
unpopular tax has been used to pay for the large Tarshite military effort in
Dragon Pass.
Tarsh Provincial Army
The Tarshite Army is the largest, most professional and most
active of the Provincial Armies. The War Tax has paid for many of its
Provincial Militia units to become, in effect, professional troops which are frequently
used for service beyond the borders of Tarsh. On the list below these regiments
are labelled as 'Paid' to indicate that they are operating as full time troops. The Tarsh Army has 6 mounted,7
foot and 3 magician regiments making up the Regular Army and 14 mounted and 34
foot making up the Militia. The Fyrd units are not really regiments but
represent the general summons of each tribal fyrd (about 25% of the population).

Sartarite Provincial Army
Sartar is not really a province as such but it may one day
become one. To encourage integration with the Empire attempts have been made to
recruit local forces as the Sartar Provincial Army. The Lunar Empire can
officially call out the fyrd of its allied tribes (in 1617 all the tribes are
officially allied though the 'Free Tribes' wouldn't obey a Lunar summons with
much enthusiasm however. See Tribal Armies for
details of the Sartar Fyrd.
In 1617 Sartar has a population (over 5) of around 160 000. So
the Provincial Army aims for an establishment strength of 4000 Regular troops
and 16 000 militia. Currently most of the Militia still need to be raised.
